RPI Chairman Strawn Responds to Culver “Iowa Press” Appearance
Des Moines, IA –Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Matt Strawn today issued the following statements in response to Governor Chet Culver’s reported comments during a taping of “Iowa Press.”
Responding to Governor Culver’s comments taking credit for a balanced 2009 budget: “It is only because of the federal stimulus bailout, not any spending discipline on the Governor’s part, that he can claim a balanced budget. All Gov. Culver did was temporarily pay off the state credit card by transferring the balance to the federal credit card.”
Responding to the Governor’s stated support for tax relief: “Governor, you are correct that you cannot raise taxes during a recession, yet even after Iowans overwhelmingly said ‘no tax on a tax’ you refuse to rule out a tax redistribution scheme that would raise taxes on up to 20 percent of Iowans.”
Responding to the Governor’s comment that most Iowans accept gay marriage: “If Governor Culver is so confident that most Iowans accept same-sex marriage, then why doesn’t he join Republican leaders in calling for a vote that simply allows Iowans to speak for themselves via a constitutional amendment.”
